The subject of archeozoological analysis is the study of bones, teeth and other parts of animal bodies (e.g. horns, hooves, shellfish shells, etc.) in an archaeological context. The analysis uses and incorporates knowledge from the natural and humanities fields. There is very close cooperation especially with archeology, which expands on the zoological findings e.g. with temporal and spatial information.

In the laboratory, analysis is performed consisting of a detailed description and measurements of each bone according to archaeozoological standards. The data is stored in a archaeozoological database. We usually count the time of technical collection and consultation, as well as the time spent by the analyst on the given project during the analysis. The price is usually around 400 CZK per hour without VAT. The product is a comprehensive analytical report, usually transmitted in digital form.

Specifications
The service specializes in the search for, separation and evaluation of plant macro-remains and pollen from different contexts of primarily archaeological sites. It concerns cultural layers and the filling of archaeological objects or the filling of permanently waterlogged sites and objects, such as wells, reservoirs, water mains, cellars, as well as lakes or blind branches of rivers. The searched-for objects are usually plant seeds or parts of fruits, but also needles, buds, grain husks and straw residues. Based on the plant structure it is then possible to evaluate which main crop plants (cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, spices, technical plants) were grown at the site or collected, but not only that. According to the discovered seeds of wild species it is possible to at least roughly reconstruct the immediate surroundings of the site, i.e. fields, meadows, waste areas, waterlogged habitats, forests and shrub formations.

The service is based on field sampling of dendrochronological samples either with a Presler drill or chainsaw, or by other means. The samples are transported to the laboratory and measured on the TimeTable instrument. The results are compared with standard curves for specific types of wood. If possible, the date of the felling of a tree is determined or the age of individual items of wood from historic constructions.

The TimeTable dendrochronological measuring instrument is used for the dating of wood samples from historical, archaeological and fossil finds of wood. Dating is based on the comparison of tree ring series obtained from samples with a standard chronology for each tree species.
Specifications
The TimeTable measuring instrument, produced in Austria, is connected to the computer using a Parser 1.3 subtraction module. PAST32 software is used for the measurement and dating of samples. On the basis of tree ring series it is possible to clarify the environmental aspects in the history of habitats and ecological surveys. The instrument enables the understanding of the long-term dynamics of forest ecosystems, the detection of geomorphological and hydrological changes in habitats (landslides, avalanches, floods, etc.). The equipment is used for basic research, but also for the dating of trees in environmental projects and for dating in heritage preservation. The instrument is often used for the dating of historic structures.

The Nikon E8Oi microscope, SMZ 1500 stereo microscope with a common scanning device for both devices, the Nikon DS-Fi1 digital camera, as well as PS control and NIS Elements software. The device is designed so that it is possible to observe microscopic objects in a series of light regimes. With both microscopes, the operator has the opportunity to observe specimens both in their own eyepieces, as well as from a highly sensitive camera through the control units and the NIS Elements program on the computer screen. This is an important feature of the integrated educational workplace. This enables demonstrations for a greater number of students during seminar exercises or through connection of the system to a large-screen projection system. The appropriate botanical objects and their internal structures can be variably displayed through the software from both microscopes.

Characteristics
The Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Paleoecology (LAPE) is a specialized university workplace, established in September 2002 at the Faculty of Science at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice.
LAPE performs all the main methods within the field of archaeobotany, in particular the analysis of plant macro-remains and the xylotomic determination of wood and embers. It also deals with the paleoecological fields:
-pollen analysis, archeozoology, dendrochronology, diatomic and phytolith analysis
--and their use in archaeology.
LAPE provides many services under agreement with the archaeological workplace. In addition to consultation relating to the use of scientific methods in archeology, it mainly concerns its own archaeozoological and archeobotanical analysis. LAPE also builds on the same type of activities carried out from 1997 to 2002 by the company ARCHEOS, which is mainly, systemically engaged in rescue archaeological research. The aforementioned company broadly supports the activities of LAPE.

Who are we?
The Department of Botany is a scientific-educational workplace that provides instruction in botanical and ecological fields for the faculty and the entire university, and also conducts research in these fields. Students from all degree levels draw up their graduate work at the Department of Botany and the related Institute of Botany of the ASCR.
What do we do and for whom?
The Department of Botany (DB) of the USB Faculty of Science is involved in the education of students in the study fields of BIOLOGY and the study field ENVIRONMENTAL CARE.
The department is developing scientific activity in collaboration with the Institute of Botany of the ASCR in the fields of taxonomy, bionomics and ecology of cyanobacteria and algae, fungi, bryophytes and vascular plants. Our research takes place both in the field and in laboratories. We are involved in both basic research and its applications, especially in the protection of nature and the environment and in ecology and restoration. Members of the department contribute to the publishing of top global scientific journals in their fields through their editorial work and their textbooks and manuals are widely used both at home and abroad.
Why do we exist?
The department guarantees master's degree programs in Botany (specialization - bionomics of cyanobacteria and algae, mycology, systematics of higher plants, ecology of populations and communities, vegetation ecology, archaeobotany) and the doctoral field of botany. It coordinates the bachelor’s degree programs and dissertations focused on botanical disciplines. It is developing scientific activities mainly in collaboration with the Institute of Botany of the ASCR in the fields of taxonomy, bionomics and ecology of cyanobacteria and algae, fungi, bryophytes and vascular plants. Special attention is paid to the use of molecular methods in the study of phylogenetic relationships of cyanobacteria, algae and higher plants, restoration ecology, ecological succession, evolution and the ecology of hemiparasitic plants and mathematical ecology.
What are our aims?
We want to educate students at all levels of study, who find jobs both at home and abroad (a number of our graduates successfully work abroad), both in research and in practice, e.g. in conservation. We want to see the results of our scientific work continue to be respected by the general professional public.
